Housing
Male mice should be kept alone -- they may fight violently with other males.
Female mice should always be kept with at least one other female for company.
Female mice should always be kept with at least one other female for company.
- Mice don't require a lot of space, but since they love to hide and burrow, you'll want to make sure there's "clutter" for them to scurry around in! Too empty of a cage may make them feel exposed and nervous, especially if they are in a high traffic area of your home.
- A 10 gallon tank with a secure screen lid topper is a good size for a single male mouse or a pair of females. I recommend tanks over the colorful wire cages to prevent escapees (many mice can easily fit through the standard ¼ inch bar spacing).
- If you want to go above and beyond for your pets, or would prefer to keep a small colony of females, a 20 gallon long tank is the perfect upgrade!

Enrichment
A few essentials for every mouse enclosure.
Running Wheel
I recommend choosing a medium sized wheel with a solid running surface. Little feet and tails can get stuck in wire wheels! |
Cardboard Tubes
Tubes are free and easy -- just save your used toilet paper and paper towel rolls. They love to tear them into pieces to use as nesting material, or sleep inside as a little hideaway. |
Hides
A hide is somewhere a mouse can retreat to rest, which helps them feel safe and secure in their enclosure. You can purchase a variety of hides from local pet stores, or get creative and make your own. |
Chew Toys
Mouse teeth are growing constantly, so it's good to have little items in their enclosure for them to tear apart and nibble on. If you choose wood products, make sure they're not treated with anything harmful and are safe for a mouse to chew on. |
